Good point! There is a point at which preservationism becomes a political fetish.
And the reverse: In the 1950s, New Haven, CT was a laboratory for urban redevelopment. The Legion Avenue neighborhood was extirpated and replaced with various ill conceived crap which, no doubt, will soon be considered historic. Meanwhile, the vanished culture of Legion Ave. proved so cohesive that, decades later, the ex-residents still meet for collegial dinner parties.
